iron, the true old fogies

I randomly found a friend on Facebook on Thursday. She was my supervisor during my freshman year at the UCLA store, and who happened to know one of my good high school friends. Small world. I was coerced into playing flag football in the tournament with her this weekend because I was going to head to tourney to watch my brother anyways. Iron (team name) is intense. They have play cards so our center tucks them in her shorts and yanks them out for the team to reference when the coach (yea, there's a coach) calls out the play. Actually, they're not as intense as before. This was their TENTH year playing in it. The average age of the team was 30. At least two of the players are mothers. Crazy!

It ended up being a good thing that I agreed to play. We started out with 11 girls on the squad on Saturday. One girl had to leave on Sunday morning for a medical mission to Ghana -- so cool! Another pulled her hamstring and couldn't run. And then we lost our QB when she lunged for a flag, got her finger caught in the runner's pocket, and ended up breaking it. So Sunday we only had 8 girls. The second team we played, on the other hand, had completely different squads for offense and defense. This last team was from Long Beach (CSULB) and I hadn't realized how ghetto these folks were until Ellaine, our fill-in QB, got mad.

Ellaine was reaching for the flag when the LB girl blocked her by dipping her shoulder. Definitely not a legal block. Ellaine managed to grab the flag but she was so pissed that she whipped it up purposely in the face of the dirty blocker. LB girl immediately tried to lunge at Ellaine and screamed, "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?? I WILL *CUT* YOU!" Crazy! I actually didn't hear this since I was on the ground at the time. But I saw the lunge and her teammates holding her back. Football is brutal! I also ended up with a black toe when a girl stepped directly on it with her cleats. We'll see how that turns out tomorrow. Hope I won't have trouble playing basketball this weekend!

Oh, did I mention that we played in the rain this morning? Hope I don't get a cold too!

1 good, 1 awesomely bad

I watched two movies within the past 4 days: Changeling and Street Fighter:The Legend of Chun Li. Based on the titles, you can probably guess which one was good and which was awesomely bad. :)

Street Fighter was entertaining for the fighting scenes, definitely not for the plot line. Or lack of. The characters weren't very well developed, but at least the acting was better than Samurai Girl, the mini series on ABC Family. My biggest beef with the movie before watching it was casting the title character with Kristin Kreuk of Smallville fame. However, by the end of the movie, she convinced me that she could pull it off. Girl kicks butt! But for the average watcher, this one is definitely a DVD rental if you have any hint of interest at all. Random note, I recognized Anis Cheurfa in the movie as Street Thug #1. He's a martial arts tricker that I saw on YouTube.

If I could learn how to do tricks like that, I could quit my day job and be in martial arts movies too! No, wait. I'm too delicate to do that. I take it back. I just wish I could fly like him!

Anyways, back to movie review, Changeling was a tad depressing. On the bright side, Angelina was great in it. No wonder why she got the Oscar nom. The movie requires the viewer to concentrate on what's being said, but the pace of the story progression moves really well. I thought it'd be boring since it's based on a true story but they managed to suck me in and postpone any bathroom breaks (TMI?). Thumbs up if you want to watch a drama and use a kleenex. Or two (that's for you, Doris).

who hearts ellen?

Ellen is hilarious. Anyone who doesn't think so is a hater and doesn't have a compatible sense of humor with me. You are not allowed to be my friend.

I heart Ellen as a fish.

I heart Ellen as a TV show host.

Tears...oh tears of laughter. I can't watch videos from Ellen at work anymore because I can't laugh silently.

weekend recap

This weekend was a little busier than most. I ventured back to my home town, West Covina to attend my cousin's wedding. Unlike the last wedding I went to, this one didn't have 5 priests and 3 deacons. No, this one only had 3 priests and 2 deacons. Maybe that's why this one took 90 minutes to complete the wedding ceremony. And then an additional 45 minutes taking pictures -- just the groom's side! just the bride's side! the wedding party! bride with her immediate family! groom with his immediate family! bride with long lost cousin from Texas! I think you understand.

A couple hours later, we traveled to somewhere in Orange County for the reception. My cousins noticed that the sign of the parking lot indicated that this hall was an adult daycare center during normal hours. The room where we ate housed hospice beds the majority of the time. Good to know. Typical 8-9 course meal featuring seafood was better than they rumored. My cousins disagreed with me. A number of them visited the local taco shop and picked up some street-style tacos. I really didn't think it was that bad...

The music, on the other hand, was questionable to me. I can't fully judge its quality since I don't listen to much Vietnamese music. The wedding band consisted of the groom's friends. There were two tables full of his friends and at least half of them visited the stage at least once to sing because they're all musically inclined like that. My mom told me she was excited and looked forward to the music because of this. I think she changed her mind when one of the guys started rapping. Or maybe when they did a techno-remix of Stand By Me. Or perhaps when they started their own little "mosh pit" on the dance floor complete with the groom crowd surfing. Or was it the glowsticks that settled it.... What a way to end the night. Sometimes, I think it's best to go with a DJ. :)
